We are a family-run business, led by myself, Andrea Sheardown (‘The Editor’), alongside my father, David Lowe (‘The Designer’).
Before launching The Effective Directories, my career included roles in the banking and airline industries. Whilst incredibly rewarding, these positions often required long periods away from home.
Following the birth of my first two children, I knew it was time for a change—one that would allow me to continue working while being more present for my family.
Having seen similar magazines succeed in neighbouring towns, I recognised a gap in the local market. Although I had no direct experience in publishing, I was driven, enthusiastic, and able to draw on my strong background in customer service.
With my dad’s support, we brought the idea to life and, within just eight weeks, launched our very first edition—The Sandbach Directory—in May 2006

As demand increased, we expanded into neighbouring areas, and today our portfolio includes Sandbach, Holmes Chapel, Congleton, Winsford and Northwich. Our five magazines are now delivered free to over 53,000 homes and businesses, becoming trusted and valued resources within the communities they serve.
In today’s fast-paced digital world, print offers something different—something more considered.
Our magazines give readers the opportunity to browse at their own pace, return to them when a service is needed, and keep them as a trusted point of reference within the home.
